Abuja Poll: ‘I Will Support Only Tinubu Supporters’ in FCT Council Elections

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates loyal to President Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming FCT Area Councils election scheduled for February 21, regardless of their political party affiliation.

Wike made the statement on Saturday night in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of former senator Sandy Onor, an event described as a celebration of six decades of scholarship, leadership, service and impact.

The minister said his position was clear and non-negotiable, insisting that his political loyalty to President Tinubu would guide his involvement in the local government elections.

We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said.

It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand.”

Wike added that he had no regrets about backing Tinubu and would continue to support candidates aligned with the president “at all costs,” stressing that his stance cuts across party lines.

Speaking on the celebrant, the FCT minister described Onor as a dependable ally and a loyal friend. According to Wike, the former senator has demonstrated reliability beyond political convenience.

He is not just a friendly person, but a trustworthy friend, especially in difficult times when you truly know who a friend is,” Wike said. “I will continue to work with you because I know that even if I am no longer alive, you will not abandon my family.”

In a citation read at the event, Professor Anthony Eyang highlighted Onor’s background and career trajectory. He said Onor, who was born on February 14, 1966, in Ikom, was raised in an environment shaped by strong community values, discipline and faith.

Eyang noted that Onor’s journey spans academia and politics, from the lecture halls of the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and later to active participation in Cross River State politics.
