Tinubu, NASS and FCT Minister Announce N320m Support for Nigerian Legion Ahead of 2026 Remembrance Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja pledged N200 million to support the Nigerian Legion, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to the welfare of serving personnel, injured officers, and families of fallen heroes.
The announcement came during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal launch held at the Presidential Villa. The National Assembly, represented at the event by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, donated N100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, contributed N20 million.

At the ceremony, the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Senate President, the Deputy Speaker, and the service chiefs were decorated with the remembrance poppy by the Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, Morenike Grace Henry.

President Tinubu urged federal institutions, private organisations, and Nigerians across sectors to contribute generously to the Legion, describing it as a vital body supporting military retirees and widows of fallen service members. He lauded the armed forces for their sacrifices in defending the nation’s unity and stabilising communities affected by conflict.

He emphasised the importance of national cohesion, urging Nigerians to embrace tolerance and reject divisive rhetoric, while recognising the country’s diversity as a strength.

Reviewing security gains under his administration, the President noted that improved collaboration among security agencies has yielded significant progress. According to him, thousands of insurgents have surrendered, major terrorist figures have been neutralised, and many captives have regained their freedom. He highlighted enhanced maritime security, with reductions in oil theft, piracy, and illegal fishing.

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the nation’s defence capabilities, citing investments in new platforms and advanced equipment for the Navy, Army, and Air Force. He added that welfare improvements for troops and veterans remain a priority, with upgraded barracks, expanded healthcare, and modernised pension verification processes.

Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, encouraged Nigerians to view the emblem as a symbol of solidarity with fallen heroes and their families. He praised the President’s continued support, particularly in the provision of hardware, training, and welfare.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, described Remembrance Day as a moment to honour the courage of soldiers who defended the nation. He noted that many communities once destabilised by conflict are gradually recovering, crediting the resilience of service personnel whose sacrifices continue to shape national security.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is commemorated annually on January 15, a solemn event that pays tribute to fallen soldiers and honours the service of living veterans.
