NPA Chairman Adeyeye Leads Strategic Visit to Rivers Ports, Strengthens Ties with Governor Fubara

Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Board, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to repositioning Rivers State’s ports as key drivers of economic growth, during a high-level working visit to the state.

The NPA delegation, led by Senator Adeyeye, commenced the working visit with an inspection of the Port Harcourt Port Complex, where they were warmly received by management and staff led by Kenechi Edith Okezie. The team continued the visit at the Onne Port Complex, where Port Manager Abdurahman Hussaini and his staff received them.

During the visit, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who pledged his administration’s readiness to partner with the NPA in revitalising seaport operations. Governor Fubara stressed that a strong synergy between the state government and federal agencies would create jobs, improve host communities, and stimulate sustainable economic growth.

Senator Adeyeye, in his remarks, underscored the strategic importance of Rivers State as host to two of Nigeria’s major port complexes. He identified key challenges such as dilapidated roads, indiscriminate truck parking, flash flooding, and the lack of a suitable office complex for the Ports Police Commissioner. He assured that the NPA would sustain corporate social responsibility projects in the state while deepening collaboration with the government to ensure that interventions address the real needs of the people.

Governor Fubara, in response, welcomed the proposals from the NPA team and promised positive consideration for most of their requests, aside from federal responsibilities such as road rehabilitation. He proposed a dedicated meeting with the NPA to develop strategies for maximising the Port Harcourt and Onne ports’ capacity, highlighting that functional seaports would help reduce urban congestion, engage youths productively, and enhance security.
