I’m Contesting for President in 2027, Not Accepting VP Position — Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, putting to rest speculation that he might accept a vice-presidential slot under former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other contender.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels TV programme, Obi made it clear that he remains committed to his presidential ambition and has not engaged in any talks to play second fiddle in the next election cycle.

“Nobody has ever discussed with me whether to be A or B or C,” Obi said. “I am going to contest for the President of Nigeria, and I believe I’m qualified.”

Not Leaving Labour Party, Not Abandoning Coalition

Obi also clarified his involvement in the new coalition of opposition forces, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, saying the move was not an act of disloyalty to the Labour Party.

“There is nothing anti-party in the decision. We are not abandoning where we are. We are going there together. What is constant is that we have agreed to work together.”

He emphasized that the coalition represents a united political strategy to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, and that it would enhance, not dilute, the strength of the Labour Party and its allies.

Inclusive Politics and Leadership Promise

Responding to criticism about his association with some political figures perceived as controversial, Obi argued that inclusive leadership was necessary for national development.

“The job of a leader is to change,” he said. “You need everybody. If you want to serve, you must serve everybody.”

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the Bola Tinubu-led administration, particularly its approach to economic and governance issues, vowing to bring competence, lawfulness, and discipline into office if elected.

“We’re going to ensure that we remove Tinubu’s government by all lawful means,” Obi said. “I will govern within the law, I will bring civility to Nigeria, and I will appoint competent people into office. I will not be Minister of Petroleum.”

Towards 2027: Opposition Forces Realign

Obi’s comments come amid increasing political realignments and collaboration among opposition figures seeking to mount a formidable challenge to the APC in 2027. The coalition efforts are largely fuelled by widespread public discontent over the economy and concerns over governance.
