Bola Tinubu Pays Glowing Tribute to Reuben Fasoranti at 100

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 100th birthday on May 11, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership, and selfless service to Nigeria.

In a statement personally signed on Sunday, President Tinubu said his “joy knows no bounds” as the nation celebrates Pa Fasoranti’s centenary, noting that the elder statesman deserves every honour and commendation for his immense contributions to education, politics, democratic struggle, and national development.

The President described Fasoranti as a man whose disciplined lifestyle, unwavering commitment to principles, and devotion to noble causes have made his life a metaphor for honesty, integrity, and true leadership.

Tinubu highlighted the Afenifere leader’s impressive educational background, noting that he earned a degree in English and Geography from the University of Ibadan, a postgraduate diploma in Education from the University of Hull, and a master’s degree in Education Administration and School Management from Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.

He also praised Fasoranti’s enduring contributions to education, including his service as a teacher and his establishment of several schools in Akure, among them Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy.

According to the President, Pa Fasoranti’s greatest impact was through his political activism and public service. A devoted disciple of the late Obafemi Awolowo, Fasoranti was a member of the defunct Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria. He served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under Governor Adekunle Ajasin, where he was credited with financial prudence and integrity.

Tinubu noted that Fasoranti later became one of the leading voices against military dictatorship and played a pivotal role in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. He also described him as the authentic and widely respected leader of Afenifere, whose voice continues to command national attention.

The President recalled the many personal tragedies and challenges Fasoranti has endured, including an assassination attempt during the military era, the death of his wife in 1991, and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.

Despite these hardships, Tinubu said the elder statesman has remained resilient and steadfast.

The President also expressed deep personal gratitude to Fasoranti for his prayers and support, especially during his presidential campaign. Tinubu recalled visiting the elder statesman in Akure at the start of his campaign, where Fasoranti prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness his emergence as President.

I thank Baba for his prayers, his belief in my vision, and his continued support for our Renewed Hope Administration,” Tinubu said. “Above all, I thank Pa Fasoranti for his service to Nigeria.

President Tinubu prayed for continued strength and long life for the elder statesman, describing his century-long life as a priceless gift to Nigeria and a lasting inspiration to future generations.
