Professor Emmanuel Remi Aiyede has formally assumed office as the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Nigerian Tribune, Nigeria’s longest surviving privately owned newspaper.
The political scientist and governance expert announced his new role in a statement released on Thursday, expressing gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility as he takes on the leadership of the newspaper’s editorial board.
I am happy to announce my assumption of a new role as the Chair of the Editorial Board of Nigerian Tribune Newspaper,” Aiyede said.
In an excerpt from his welcome address to members of the newly constituted editorial board, Professor Aiyede described the board as a reflection of Nigeria’s diverse professional excellence and intellectual depth.
“It is with a profound sense of humility and enthusiasm that I welcome you to this newly constituted board. We are an assembly that truly reflects the rich tapestry of Nigerian excellence, a confluence of distinguished experience, expert knowledge, and exemplary professional voices. Our diversity is our greatest strength,” he stated.
He emphasised that the board is united by a shared commitment to uphold the enduring legacy of the newspaper’s founder, Obafemi Awolowo, stressing the role of the Nigerian Tribune as a moral and intellectual compass in national discourse.
According to him, the newspaper must continue to stand as a symbol of credibility, analytical rigour, and progressive patriotism, particularly in an era of complex national challenges.
In this era, the Nigerian Tribune must rise as an unwavering beacon of credibility, analytical depth, and progressive patriotism. Our mandate is clear: our editorials must inform and educate, provoke constructive thought, and hold power accountable,” Aiyede said.
He added that the editorial board is tasked with amplifying marginalized voices and promoting national unity and development through responsible journalism.
We are tasked with giving voice to the voiceless and tirelessly advocating for the unity and development of our beloved nation,” he noted.
Professor Aiyede described his appointment as an honour and pledged to serve as a facilitator and unifying force within the board as it undertakes its editorial responsibilities.
I am deeply honoured to serve as your chairman and to play the role of facilitator and harmoniser as we embark on this important work. Together, we shall strive to produce editorial content that is not merely read but remembered; not just consumed but contemplated,” he said.
His assumption of office signals a renewed editorial direction for the Nigerian Tribune, anchored on accountability, public enlightenment, and the promotion of democratic values.
