Russia’s Lavrov Sends Independence Day Greetings to U.S., Calls for Constructive Bilateral Ties

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has extended a message of goodwill to the United States, congratulating Americans on their 2025 Independence Day celebration and expressing hope for improved bilateral relations between both nations.
In a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Lavrov emphasized Russia’s support for “America’s pursuit of unity and the realization of the American dream,” despite the geopolitical tensions that have marred relations in recent years.

“The Russian Federation extends its support for America’s pursuit of unity and the realization of the American dream,” Lavrov wrote in the official statement dated July 4, 2025.

He also expressed readiness for closer collaboration between Moscow and Washington, noting that both sides could benefit from a relationship grounded in mutual respect and awareness of each other’s unique national interests.

“I look forward to our collaborative efforts further enhancing bilateral relations in a constructive direction, fostering stability and predictability rooted in mutual respect and consideration for each other’s national interests shaped by history, geography, and realities on the ground,” he said.

Lavrov’s message included a warm tribute to the American people and the founding ideals of the United States. He wished them continued peace and prosperity as they celebrate the historic day marking the nation’s 1776 declaration of independence from British rule.

“I take this opportunity to wish the American people to follow the path of peace and prosperity, as they continue to uphold the enduring principles enshrined in the U.S. Declaration of Independence ensuring every individual’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the message concluded.

The gesture comes at a time of strained ties between the U.S. and Russia, with ongoing disagreements over Ukraine, cybersecurity, arms control, and NATO expansion continuing to define relations. However, Lavrov’s diplomatic tone signals a potential desire by Moscow to reduce friction and seek common ground—at least symbolically—on an occasion of national significance to Americans.

As Washington evaluates the overture, analysts will be watching closely for any follow-up communications or policy shifts that suggest whether this note of goodwill is a genuine opening or merely a diplomatic formality.
