Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Passes On at 90 — One Year After Ascending Throne

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, just one year after ascending the revered throne of the ancient Yoruba city.

Sources confirmed that the monarch joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, two days after marking his 90th birthday.

Oba Olakulehin’s death marks the end of a brief yet symbolic reign that began precisely one year ago. His ascension came after the passing of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, in 2024. Despite health concerns during his time on the throne, the Olubadan remained a respected father figure and custodian of Ibadan's deeply-rooted cultural traditions.

Until formal announcement by the Olubadan-in-Council and the Oyo State Government, details surrounding his final rites remain under wraps. However, Ibadan residents and traditional leaders are expected to pay homage in accordance with custom.

Oba Olakulehin's departure leaves a significant void in the Ibadan traditional institution. As tradition dictates, succession is likely to follow the established chieftaincy hierarchy unique to Ibadanland, a city known for its rotational and lineal system of kingship.

Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, traditional rulers, and residents across Oyo State and beyond, acknowledging his leadership, humility, and the stability he brought to the stool despite his brief time in office.
