Peter Obi Declares Support for ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections, Says Nigeria Needs 'Bridges, Not Walls'

Presidential hopeful and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has confirmed his backing for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the new political platform to drive what he calls Nigeria’s urgent need for “transformative leadership” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made this known in a statement shared via his official X handle on Thursday, following the coalition's official adoption of the ADC in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.

According to him, the decision to join forces under the ADC was not taken lightly but came after “deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.”

The unveiling of the new coalition platform drew national attention, with key political heavyweights including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai publicly aligning with the ADC. Their endorsement of the party signals a major shift in the 2027 political landscape, potentially challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi, 63, reiterated his proposal to serve only a single term if elected and emphasized the coalition’s shared commitment to restoring competent and people-centered governance in Nigeria.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” he stated.

He also acknowledged the difficulties of building consensus in Nigeria’s fractious political environment but underscored the importance of unity in confronting the country’s challenges.

“To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy,” Obi added.

The formation of this new political alliance is expected to reshape pre-election calculations, especially as it brings together former political rivals under one umbrella. With David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola taking top leadership roles in the ADC, the coalition is positioning itself as a broad-based movement for national renewal.
