Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London. This announcement was shared by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad.
Ahmad, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), disclosed that the ex-president passed away on Saturday afternoon at a clinic in London. “The family of the former president has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” the statement read.
Buhari, who was 81, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, after having previously ruled the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985. Known for his tough stance on corruption and his promise to restore discipline in governance, Buhari's administration focused on fighting insurgency, improving infrastructure, and reviving Nigeria’s struggling economy.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari’s career spanned military and civilian leadership, making him one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures. His return to power in 2015 marked the first time an incumbent president was defeated at the ballot box, signaling a significant moment in the nation’s democratic journey.
The late president’s burial will follow Islamic traditions, with the family expected to announce the arrangements in the coming hours.
