The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has praised the unwavering character and integrity of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as he marked his 60th birthday in Abuja over the weekend.
Speaking during a colourful celebration that included the presentation of a new book titled “Sam Daddy In My Eyes”, Wike hailed Anyanwu as a symbol of consistency and courage, applauding his ability to weather internal party challenges without losing his dignity or direction.
“My friends and I congratulate you on your 60th birthday and on your victory as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP,” Wike declared. “It’s clear from the massive crowd here today that you’re a man of the people.”
Wike assured Anyanwu of his full support, describing him as a rare figure in a political landscape riddled with inconsistency and betrayal.
“You don't fight a war, win the war, and then go begging,” Wike said. “You’ve won, let those who have issues come to you. Don’t bow, don’t beg. You have people like me; we’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again.”
He also took a swipe at party leaders he accused of shifting positions, saying, “Some people are going right, left, front and back. What they say in the morning isn’t what they say at night. That’s not leadership.”
Wike revealed that he once challenged Anyanwu to assess whether he had the stamina for what he called “a fight against the odds”, a struggle that included resistance from powerful party stakeholders and even governors.
“So I warned him, if you know you will not stand firm, say it now. I also asked him, are you sure you can stand this fight?“A fight where virtually everybody, including governors are fighting you, will not be easy but if you stand firm you will win.“However, if you begin to go left and you go right, not only will you lose, you will suffer and he assured me that he will stand firm and will not change,” he said.”
Wike used the occasion to underscore his often-repeated stance that character and consistency are far more valuable than wealth or influence.
He added that Anyanwu’s steadfastness had not only earned his admiration but also the endorsement of others, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who was also present at the event and commended the PDP scribe’s loyalty to his word.
You have shown me, with what has just happened recently, that you are a man who will stand by his words.
Wike shared that Anyanwu’s mother had called to express gratitude for standing by her son through political storms, echoing the value of having leaders who make decisions and stand by them, no matter the cost.
“His mother called me the other day and said ‘my son, I am happy that people like you will take decisions, stand firm and swear not to be disgraced.“This is what we are talking about people of character. You don't buy it in the market,” he said.
