Govt Declares a 12 Day Sallah Break For Schools

The Kano State Government has officially declared a 12-day holiday for all primary and post-primary schools in observance of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Education, the break will begin on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, and schools are scheduled to resume academic activities on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The statement, signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, confirmed that the directive applies to both day and boarding schools across the state.

“All pupils and students in public and private primary and post-primary institutions are to proceed on Eid-el-Kabir holiday from Wednesday, 4th June, 2025, and are to resume on Sunday, 15th June, 2025,” the statement reads.

The ministry also urged parents and guardians of boarding students to ensure they pick up their children in the early hours of June 4 to allow for timely departure from schools. The Ministry of Education emphasized that all schools—whether government-owned or privately managed—are expected to comply with this directive.

The break is part of the state government’s efforts to ensure that families and communities can observe Eid-el-Kabir festivities without academic interruptions. This aligns with cultural and religious values observed annually across Nigeria during Islamic holidays.

Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important religious holidays in Islam. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, a story that is revered by Muslims around the world. In Kano and other parts of Nigeria, Eid-el-Kabir is typically marked by special prayers, family gatherings, charitable giving, and the ritual slaughter of animals such as rams or cows. The school holiday provides children with the opportunity to participate in these cultural and religious observances.

The Ministry advised parents and school authorities to ensure a smooth and orderly transition into the holiday period, especially for boarding students. Schools have been instructed to implement appropriate handover procedures to avoid confusion or delay.

Parents are also reminded to prepare their children adequately for resumption on June 15, ensuring they return with necessary school materials and are mentally ready for academic work.
