The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) arrested Enugu State–based native doctor Obi Obieze at the Gbaji checkpoint along the Badagry–Seme Expressway as he attempted to flee the country. Masked and restrained in both hand and leg cuffs, Obieze was transferred yesterday to the Lagos State Police Command, where he was formally handed over to CP Olohundare Jimoh at the command headquarters.
Obieze—also known as Obu Onyeka—was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force for alleged kidnapping and ritual killings. According to NIS sources, he evaded capture by boarding a night bus to Mile 2 in Lagos, arriving around 10:00 am. Determined to escape further, he hired a commercial Bajaj motorcycle to convey him toward the Seme border. An alert immigration officer, however, recognized the suspect at roughly 2:00 pm and ordered the rider to stop. When Obieze tried to bolt, border patrol operatives swiftly subdued him and conveyed him to the NIS cell pending coordination with headquarters.
Journalists invited to witness the handover were barred from speaking with the suspect. Obieze, a resident of Umuojor village in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, faces serious charges relating to the kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl earlier this month.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that formal charges will be filed once Obieze is medically examined and interrogated. Meanwhile, the NIS has reiterated its commitment to preventing the escape of high-profile suspects and safeguarding Nigeria’s borders.
