Tinubu Reconstitutes NERC Board, Charges Members to Deepen Power Sector Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16.

The reconstituted board is chaired by Dr Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, who was appointed Chairman with effect from December 1, 2025. Dr Oseni, a former Vice Chairman of the Commission, first joined NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and will serve as Chairman until the completion of his statutory ten-year tenure, in line with the Electricity Act, 2023.

Dr Yusuf Ali was appointed Vice Chairman, effective December 1, 2025. He was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022 and will serve in the role for the remainder of his current term.

Other members of the board include Mr Nathan Rogers Shatti and Mr Dafe Akpeneye, both of whom are serving second terms after their initial appointments in January 2017. Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, first appointed in December 2020, is also serving a second term as Commissioner.

The board also includes Dr Chidi Ike, who is serving his first term after being appointed in February 2022, and Dr Fouad Animashaun, whose appointment as Commissioner takes effect from December 2025. Dr Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and previously served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu has tasked the reconstituted board with deepening and consolidating ongoing reforms in the electricity sector, directing members to align strictly with the provisions and objectives of the Electricity Act, 2023, as part of efforts to strengthen regulation and improve power supply across the country.
