The Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Senator Dayo Adeyeye, has called for the revival and modernisation of Delta ports as part of efforts to boost Nigeria’s maritime trade and open up new opportunities in the Blue Economy.
Senator Adeyeye made the statement on Monday, August 25, 2025, while leading the Authority's Board of Directors on a courtesy visit to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House in Asaba, as part of the NPA's nationwide port tour.
He stated that Warri, Burutu, Sapele, and Koko ports remain strategically important to the nation's economy, but they face challenges such as shallow waterways, underutilisation, and the long-awaited dredging of the Warri channel. He emphasised that addressing these issues through public-private partnerships and long-term government collaboration would establish Delta as a key hub for maritime transportation, fisheries, tourism, and renewable energy.
The NPA Chairman commended Delta State's rapid growth and infrastructure transformation under Governor Oborevwori, particularly the state's investments in roads, bridges, and security, which have created an enabling environment for business and trade. He also acknowledged the State Government's assistance in maintaining security around the ports, which he described as critical for investor confidence.
In response, Governor Oborevwori welcomed the delegation and stated that his administration is willing to collaborate with the Federal Government and private investors to revitalize the Delta ports. He emphasised the significance of dredging the Warri channel and rehabilitating port facilities in Warri and Koko, describing them as critical gateways for trade, investment, and job creation.
The Governor also highlighted Delta's investor-friendly environment, which is built on peace, infrastructure renewal, and policies that protect investors while strengthening ties with host communities.
The visit emphasised Delta State's strategic role in national trade facilitation and marked another step forward in deepening collaboration between the Nigerian Ports Authority and the State Government to realise the full potential of the state's maritime assets.
