Adeyeye Leads Bold Push to Reposition Calabar Port as Economic Gateway

The Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, led the members of the NPA Board on a three-day working visit to the Calabar Port in Cross Rivers State, in a move that reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's renewed hope to revive the Nigerian maritime sector.

Upon arrival at the port, the delegation was warmly received by the Port Manager, Mr. Ekene Ibifiri Alex, senior management and staff, before touring the major installations at the port and inspecting ongoing projects. The visit intends to assess operations, liaise with stakeholders, and identify ways to enhance the efficiency, infrastructure and competitiveness of the port.

Governor Bassey Otu received the NPA team at the Government House and assured his government of its total backing for the maritime vision of the President, with particular reference to the realisation of the Bakassi Deep Seaport and the upgrading of Calabar Port. He described the port as a lifeline to the economic aspirations of Cross River, adding that he would collaborate with the NPA in enticing more shipping traffic. He took the opportunity to reiterate the State’s support for President Tinubu's Administration for the next eight years.

The NPA Chairman commended Governor Otu for aligning with President Tinubu’s reform agenda, noting that despite its strategic location serving the South-South, South-East, and North-Central regions, Calabar Port currently handles about 2.7% of Nigeria’s total cargo throughput. He expressed confidence that with strong Federal–State collaboration, the port would reclaim its rightful place as a major hub for trade, tourism, and industrial growth.

Also, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye and his team made a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, King Oboh of Calabar, where he applauded the peaceful atmosphere at the port and its host communities, stressing the importance of community cooperation in safeguarding the port infrastructures and future development.

The working visit continues with further inspections and consultations aimed at unlocking Calabar Port’s full potential in line with President Tinubu’s drive to modernise Nigeria’s ports and grow the maritime economy.
