Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has dismissed as false and mischievous an online report alleging that he and some political leaders in the state are planning to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the influence of former Governor Kayode Fayemi.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Olayinka Oyebode, the governor described the report as a “tissue of lies” being peddled by “unscrupulous and faceless individuals” bent on sowing discord within the state’s political structure and misleading the public.
“The Governor and other public officials mentioned remain firmly rooted in the All Progressives Congress (APC), with no links whatsoever to the ADC or plans to defect,” the statement read.
The rumour, reportedly circulated by unnamed political detractors, claimed that Fayemi was rallying support for a mass defection to the ADC. However, Oyebode noted that the former governor recently attended the APC caucus meeting in Iyin-Ekiti, where the party formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji for second terms. The event was widely reported across media platforms.
The statement emphasized that Governor Oyebanji has never left the progressive political camp since the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999, a rare feat among Ekiti politicians. The attempt to weaponise his longstanding relationship with Fayemi, according to Oyebode, is a failed strategy aimed at driving a wedge between the Governor and the President.
“These are antics of desperate politicians who lack the vision and structure to connect with the electorate or present a credible alternative. Instead of promoting their ideas and aspirations, they resort to falsehoods on social media,” Oyebode added.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) having fixed the date for the APC governorship primary, the Governor’s team urged aspirants to face the party faithful and “sell their candidature” rather than rely on underhanded tactics to gain relevance.
The statement concluded with a call to the people of Ekiti to disregard the rumour entirely and remain focused on the ongoing developmental agenda of the Oyebanji administration.
