The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced that all multiple-choice examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will go fully digital by November 2025, with NECO and essay-based papers to follow in 2026.
He made this statement in Abuja on Wednesday while monitoring ongoing WAEC Computer-Based Tests (CBT), Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating exam malpractice and modernizing the nation’s examination systems through digital innovation.
“We now have clear evidence that when exams are done using technology, the level of fraud is minimized to almost zero,” he stated.
He commended WAEC for spearheading this transformation, calling the transition from paper-based exams to CBT a historic step toward fairness and credibility in Nigeria’s education sector.
The Minister further highlighted the technical safeguards WAEC has implemented, including the use of a secured Local Area Network (LAN) for administering exams—making it, in his words, “literally impossible to hack.”
“We are working very hard to eliminate fraud in our exam system, and WAEC is taking the lead,” Dr Alausa stated.
As the countdown to 2026 begins, stakeholders and students alike are being urged to embrace this shift as a critical step in enhancing efficiency, security, and integrity in national assessments.
